Hakka Thunder Tea Rice (Stall number 3)

Because Clement ate char kwey teow for dinner last night (FYI, the fat content in char kwey teow is 30g-- the total amt you need for an entire day), he was a little guilty after I told him about the "30g fat" and he offered to eat TTR with me for lunch.

To help him burn off some of the 30g fat, I assigned him to vacum the floor in the morning. Then we went to the gym for a 30mins exercise. I have been running 5km everyday for the past 5 days. My hip bones are giving me a stern warning so I did brisk walking instead.

Then we walked to the coffeeshop 2 bus stops away to try TTR stall number 3.

The old aunty in the pictures below is rude. Instead of saying "2 bowls" (两碗), I said "给我两份"(2 servings). Well, it wasn't wrong. I didn't say “两包”(2 packets)。Aunty took a glance at me and continued to prepare the rice for someone else. I stood there for 2 seconds and I asked her "You will serve to me, right?"

Aunty began to lecture me. "You want to eat here or take away?" "Eat here? Then you must say 2 bowls! You said 2 servings! If you want to take away I will tarbao for you. You don't say 2 ..."

I snapped at her and said "Ok! TWO BOWLS, OKIE????????"

I really hate being lectured by the hawkers after they clarified my order. Why don't they just get their clarification and SHUT UP!

I secretly decided that I will not patronise this stall anymore.

The soup is way too diluted but the rice is good, I must say. Lots of chai-por and peanuts. I chewed until my jaws were tired. This is a good thing for me because I tend to swallow my food before I chew them properly. The peanuts actually slowed down my eating.

It costs $3 and I think it is reasonable too.

Anyway, I adopted Meekfreek's method to eat TTR. That is, I drink the soup first. I think the soup has all the gooodies and if I pour them into the rice and couldn't finish it, it was be wasted. However I realised something funny. For the past 2 meals of TTR, I did not try putting the soup into the rice but I did so today since Clement only took a quarter bowl of the soup. I realised that the rice tasted a bit bitter! It didn't taste bitter when I was drinking the soup. Funny?!

While chewing the rice, I saw a middle aged man serving his customers TTR. He must be the old woman's son. He had a much better attitude. He smiled and nodded to his customers when serving them. That is the way to run a business! Not lecturing your customers and teaching them YOUR way of ordering food. Strangely, I met quite a few lecturer-hawkers. The last one I remembered was the famous soya bean stall in Beauty World Market. I was so angry I scolded her back and threw the money on the table until the other aunty had to apologise to me. Needless to say, I did not patronise that stall again.

Will I go back to stall number 3? Hmmm... maybe. But I will only order from the uncle.

Next on my to-try list will be the one in Geylang. Meanwhile, I think I will stick to stall number 1 for the time being.

Angie,
I notice that stall no.1 and this stall do not give ikan bilis. You should definitely try Geylang. I went down there again today. The serving is huge. 2 people can share it.

Maybe I should start running too...to double the effect!

Wow, seems like you are on a Tea Rice Marathon! I've yet to eat any tea rice from outside other than my mum's. Hee hee, personally, I don't think any of the stalls can compare to my mum's! ^_^
