Art, Bubbles, Cameras--ABC in Botanic Garden
Clement upgradeded his camera body and lens recently and his buddy Nicholas bought a new DSLR too. The next logical thing to happen is the 2 buddies decided to meet up in Botanic Garden for a photography session. The children will draw and play bubbles together while they become the photography subjects of their daddies.
In the end, I took over the camera and shot a number of photos too!

WAH..these are beautifully capture..i am so tempted to buy one too
wahahahahah!! totally agree with u!
btw, wats the lens u use to take hah?
levine - these were taken using my old lens, the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. its a pretty handy all-purpose lens. i only got the new lens (EF 50mm f/1.4 USM) after the botanic gardens session. need to arrange another shooting session with this new piece of glass.:)
Those are great pictures! ;)
And I totally agree with you on the last statement!!!!
Yes... they are pretty pics.
匠欲善其事,必先‘拥’其器?
Niiice....Clement, which Canon body did u get? You going to get an f/2.8 zoom? Let me know how you go with your fixed 50mm.
MF, i moved a tiny notch from 400D to 450D. thought it was worthwhile cos this now gives me (i) live view and (ii) SD card storage [rather than the irksome Compact Flash card].
have only shot a handful of shots with the 50mm. i like it. gives very pleasant background blur (bokeh) when it's wide open at f/1.4. it's also very sharp when stopped down to f/2 and below. i've loaned my 28-135mm to my friend, so will be shooting with the 50mm in the meanwhile. hv you tried shooting with 50mm lenses? though it is quite good in terms of framing - not too wide not too tight.
Clement,
Congrats on your purchase! I think you will definitely benefit from the "live view".
Although I agree the bokeh is very nice with fixed lenses I just don't feel very comfortable using it. I tried the Nikkor 50mm f1.8 last weekend. Not so simple for me since you need to physically move in for a close up and with little kids, timing is everything! I find it's not wide enough for me. I tried to take a pic of Izzy in the car but couldn't get enough distance (away from subject). When i tried to take a far shot with her on the slide she turned out to be a speck.
However, I do feel your choice of lens is more versatile than the 85mm you were originally eyeing. The f1.4 is super fast. With 50mm its a natural human eye framing...if you get what I mean.
I've since set my camera up using Aperture Priority and single point focus (moveable with toggle) for much sharper pics. I had multipoint focus and sometimes the main subject would not be as sharp because the camera doesn't actually know what your main subject is.
Your 28-135 would be 42-202.5 @ f3.5-5.6. Have you considered a 17-55mm (that would be 25.5-82.5) f2.8? When Jaimie gets older and you do her concert pics or sports day (sitting far) you can also consider a 70-200mm f2.8mm.
For fixed lenses, they are much cheaper so you can pick one up as and when. They are also quite light and inconspicuous so you can carry a few in your bag at a time.
If you want to try out some equipment before actually buying you can rent from here http://www.camerarental.biz/
Can't wait to see more pics from you :)
Very nice pics... But IT idiot like me no matter use how good equipments also can't gets very nice pics..
MF, yes i agree with you that 85mm would be too tight. I examined my shooting habits with my 28-135mm lens and found that i tend to frame more near the 50mm range rather than @ 85mm. And yes, our cameras have crop factor so i'd need quite a bit of space if i'd gotten the 85mm. that was why i later sourced out the 50mm lens instead.
i think i'd live with these 2 lenses for now. i'm not really keen on lugging around multiple lenses when i bring my camera out. don't like the idea of swapping lenses outside. i shd be just affixing one lens and shoot throughout the session with that piece. for holiday trips, i'd just have to stick to my 28-135mm which provides quite good coverage for my shooting needs.
wow..this sounds like DSLR Forum...hehe.
Indeed, it's so interesting to learn all these new knowledge.
Clement, you should organise a gatherings for all the DSLR wannabe and give some tips on the usage/function..hehe. I want to register 1st...:P
cheers,
